      Chronic wounds

Driven by diabetes and the effects of an ageing population, hard-to-heal wounds remain a major challenge for modern healthcare systems.

Chronic cutaneous ulcers are defined as wounds which fail to proceed through phases of wound healing in an orderly and timely manner to produce a durable structural functional and cosmetic closure. Macro and microvascular disorders are some of the most frequent causes for a delayed wound healing process.

        Optical stimulation

Photobiomodulation is a non-thermal process which involves endogenous light absorbing molecules that elicit photo-physical events at biological scale. Light in the far red to near infrared spectral range using low energy light emitting sources is reported to be especially bio-modulative. Triggering phase transitions in the active centre of Cytochrome C oxidase, facilitates the substrate to product conversion and augments the turnover rates of the enzyme. The photodissociation of nitric oxide further increases tissue perfusion and acts like kick-start for cellular respiration. Photobiomodulation has now accumulated evidence of a positive action on all phases of wound repair from the first inflammatory phases to the remodelling phase.

          Magnetic stimulation

Magnetic stimulation is capable of modifying intracellular calcium through mechanosensitive ion channels. Calcium, a vital intracellular signal, modulates cellular function and gene expression during tissue repair. Mitochondria the biological power engine of humans, is essentially regulated by calcium. To empower the intricate processes of wound healing, enough intracellular energy is essential. Additionally the supply of nutrients and oxygen, provided by adequate perfusion supports these processes. Calcium additionally regulates the production of nitric oxide a potent mediator for vasodilation and subsequent tissue perfusion. This way the magnetic stimulation acts as a kick start especially for chronic wounds.

          COMS® Technology

The COMS® One therapy system incorporates the technologies for optical and magnetic stimulation. The optical stimulation component of the COMS® One Therapy System is designed to emit light by two types of LEDs in the wavelength of 660 nm (red) and 830 nm (near infrared) range of the electromagnetic spectra. The magnetic stimulation component is generated by a coil emitting pulse modulated magnetic fields in the extremely low frequency (ELF) range of the electromagnetic spectra.

          Founders of Piomic Medical

          2016

          The story

With the vision of using physical stimulation for wound healing the two biologists Marc Augsburger and Christopher Hertz decided to found a company. They soon realised the need for an engineer capable building their idea, so the third person to join the duo was mechanical engineer Jari Kruth, a childhood friend of Hertz. Together with serial entrepreneur Jürg Fröhlich, who had led an ETH team researching electromagnetism in medicine and biology, they founded the company Piomic Medical in 2016.

As a native North German, I grew up in the beautiful port city of Hamburg. After my school education, I had the opportunity to move from the sea to the Swiss mountains. An adventure that has shaped me until today.

From an early age, I was fascinated by the uniqueness and diversity of biology. I was lucky enough to complete my education as a natural scientist in molecular biology at ETH Zurich. The analytical scientific way of thinking helps me to analyze the big picture and make complex decisions in business challenges.

Every day at Piomic is like a new adventure for me. Through our work, we want to develop a therapy that is safe and effective, in order to offer a better future to all those in need and patients. You can feel this passion in working with such an empathetic and inquisitive team. As co-founder, I am very proud to be able to contribute to this vision.

Growing up in the region of Zürich I was fully absorbed by sports and was even able to represent Switzerland internationally in Freestyle Aerials competitions all over the world. Not surprisingly I have had some unintentional contact with medical devices during that time and was highly fascinated by the possibilities of modern medicine.

Due to my interest in medicine very early on into my studies in mechanical engineering I decided to focus in biomedical engineering. After more than 10 years working in different fields such as orthopaedics, lung- and heart surgery and wound care I finally joined Piomic early 2018. As I am very interested in understanding why and how innovations are performing on the market I also graduated in business while trying to solve the mystery of successful innovation. Due to my broad interest and experiences I am supporting Piomic in a very broad role as COO at Piomic.

What do I love about Piomic? Working every day with a highly motivated team in order to help patients with hard to heal wounds is the best thing I could imagine!

At the same time, I enjoy traveling and engaging with people and cultures from around the world.

After studying Electrical Engineering at ETH Zurich, I earned a doctorate in the simulation of electromagnetic fields (EMF). This was followed by an excursion into Operations Research at the University of Zurich before taking on a role as project leader at a research foundation focused on dosimetry and the biological effects of EMF. During this time, I initiated various projects exploring diagnostics and therapies using electromagnetic fields and later established the research group “Electromagnetics in Biology and Medicine” at ETH Zurich. It was here that I also began working on magnetic field therapies. These research activities led to the founding of two companies: Luciole Medical AG and Fields at Work GmbH. My career has also included research stays in Japan and Singapore. At Piomic I am co-founder and Chief Scientific Officer, where I contribute my experience and expertise to advancing our project.

          Why Piomic?

A meaningful application that addresses an acute problem, as an exciting project, and a great, motivated team.

I grew up moving around German-speaking Switzerland, including the areas of Zurich, Zug, and Sargans. Today, I live with my small family in the countryside around Zurich in Bonstetten. Early in my career, as a trainer for blood chemistry analyzers, I developed a deep curiosity about people from different cultures. This curiosity eventually led me to spend half a year of civil service in Cameroon, an experience that left lasting impressions on my life.

My professional journey began with an apprenticeship as a technical model maker, followed by a degree in Systems Engineering (FH) with a specialization in medical technology. I gained valuable experience in both the medical device sector and the semiconductor industry, which broadened my technical and regulatory perspective. Supporting people through my work has always been important to me, and at Piomic I can live up to this value by being responsible for Quality Management and Regulatory Affairs—ensuring that our products consistently meet the highest standards of safety and compliance.

What do I love about Piomic?

The outstanding cooperation and strong team spirit make Piomic a truly unique and inspiring place to work.

Born in Australia with Kiwi-French roots, I went to school in France before moving to Germany to study nutritional sciences. As a teenager I had the opportunity to live in India for a year and imerse myself in the local culture. This sparked my passion to help others and to work to improve healthcare around the world. I believe that taking a holistic approach to health is essential and that kindness, fresh air, the sea and a hot cup of tea can almost always save the day.

My master thesis was my entry into clinical research and after more than 13 years of managing clinical research projects in various indications for a large pharmaceutical company I am excited to take on a new challenge and lead the clinical operations for Piomic.

What do I love about Piomic? The dynamics of a start-up combined with an open-minded, professional, fun and diversifed team is what makes Piomic exceptional/unique.

At Piomic, I am thrilled to be able to help shape an innovative product from the ground up and thus enable visible progress in wound healing. After many exciting and hands-on development projects, I am now looking forward to further expanding my knowledge in the field of project management.

Zurich, Switzerland – 18 September 2026 – Piomic Medical, an emerging regenerative medtech company focused on complex tissue healing, today announced the closing of a growth financing of USD 25 million. The financing is led by a CHF 10 million commitment from Swisscanto (CH) Private Equity Switzerland Growth II L-QIF KmGK (“Swisscanto”), the growth fund of Zürcher Kantonalbank’s asset management division. Piomic is the fund’s first medtech investment. The financing includes strong participation from existing shareholders, including Diabetes Venture Fund, Zürcher Kantonalbank, Verve Ventures, Sky Stiftung, N&V Capital and the Swiss Single Family Office, as well as further private and institutional investors. Piomic has secured more than USD 50 million in equity, convertible capital and non-dilutive funding and grants since inception.

It funds the company through its next value inflection points, including the MAVERICKS interim readout and the FDA market approval process. Clinical and industry interest in the COMS® platform continues to grow, with the investigator-initiated NAZARÉ trial led by a consortium of European key opinion leaders now underway across Europe.

Positioned for a U.S. Wound Care Market in Transition

The U.S. advanced wound care market is in transition, creating a significant opportunity for new treatment modalities that combine rigorous clinical evidence with an established reimbursement framework. With Medicare implementing capped site-neutral payment for skin substitutes and increasingly emphasizing evidence-based coverage, technologies entering the market with high-quality controlled evidence and established reimbursement infrastructure are positioned to capture significant market share. Market analyst SmartTRAK, in its 2026 review of U.S. advanced wound care devices, identified COMS® One as a frontrunner among emerging technologies entering the market with defined regulatory and reimbursement pathways.1

COMS® One holds FDA Breakthrough Device Designation, granted in September 2025. Under the recently finalized CMS FY 2027 IPPS rule, COMS® One retained eligibility, through CMS’s grandfathering provision, for the Alternative Pathway to Medicare New Technology Add-on Payment and OPPS transitional device pass-through payment, a position now closing to new entrants and rare among wound care technologies. Together with recently granted CPT® III codes for COMS® therapy in effect since January 2025 and Medicare coverage of the MAVERICKS IDE Category B study, this gives COMS® One an unusually advanced reimbursement foundation ahead of U.S. market authorization.

The FDA’s Breakthrough Device Designation for COMS® reflects the significant unmet need faced by patients with refractory diabetic foot ulcers, where associated five-year mortality is comparable to many cancers.2 This financing supports the timely completion of our clinical development program and enables us to accelerate preparations for U.S. market approval and global launch of COMS® One, while expanding the COMS® platform into additional indications to address the clinical needs of a broader patient population.

Piomic combines a technologically compelling, clinically validated therapy with a highly attractive regulatory and reimbursement position in a large, structurally growing market. With our investment, we are supporting a treatment modality that has the potential to assume a globally leading role in wound care. Piomic is an excellent first addition to our new growth fund’s life sciences portfolio, and we look forward to working with the Piomic team and board to scale the business and realize its long‑term potential.
Susanne K. Schorsch and Ellen Rietmann AhlSenior Investment Director and Investment Manager, Swisscanto

In connection with the financing, Andy Weymann, MD, joins Piomic’s Board of Directors as a Board Observer. An orthopedic surgeon by training, Dr. Weymann served for nearly 14 years as Chief Medical Officer of Smith+Nephew, where he led clinical, scientific and medical affairs across the group, including Advanced Wound Care. He has since held chairman and executive roles at medtech start-ups and scale-ups in wound care and regenerative medicine, and brings more than 25 years of board and M&A experience in the sector.

          Clinical Development Progress

COMS® One is being evaluated in MAVERICKS (NCT05758545), one of the most comprehensive IDE pivotal trials conducted to date in wound care: a prospective, randomized, sham-controlled, double-blinded Category B IDE study across 30 U.S. sites in 224 patients with refractory diabetic foot ulcers. CMS approved Medicare coverage of the study in June 2023; the trial’s endpoints and age-stratified enrollment were designed to generate evidence relevant to both FDA and Medicare decision-making, with results generalizable to the Medicare population. The MAVERICKS protocol was published in the peer-reviewed journal WOUNDS in 2025.3

In Europe, where COMS® One is CE marked under the EU Medical Device Regulation, a consortium of leading European wound care clinicians has launched NAZARÉ, an investigator-initiated clinical trial evaluating COMS® in chronic vascular leg ulcers under real-world conditions across European wound centers in Switzerland, Austria, Germany, France and the UK.4

Zurich, Switzerland – 01 July 2026 – Piomic Medical, a Swiss medical device company pioneering non-invasive optical and magnetic stimulation therapy for tissue regeneration, today noted the publication of the NAZARÉ study protocol in the peer-reviewed journal Trials (published online 29 Jun 2026; DOI 10.1186/s13063-026-09859-1). NAZARÉ is an investigator-initiated randomized controlled trial evaluating the COMS® One Therapy System as an adjunct to standard of care in patients with vascular ulcers.

          A rigorous, real-world evidence design

NAZARÉ is a phase IV, multicenter, parallel-group, superiority RCT with blinded outcome assessment, conducted at over ten specialist wound-care centers across Switzerland, France, Germany, United Kingdom and Austria (ClinicalTrials.gov NCT06528873). The trial plans to enroll 122 adults with venous leg ulcers (VLU) or VLU complicated by peripheral arterial disease. Following a two-week run-in on optimized standard of care, designed to enrich the population for genuinely chronic wounds, participants are randomized 1:1 to standard of care plus COMS® or standard of care alone.

The primary endpoint is percentage wound area reduction at week 12, measured by centrally blinded digital planimetry. Secondary endpoints include complete wound closure, time-to-healing, pain, health-related quality of life, recurrence, and healthcare resource use over 24 weeks. The study is sponsored by Prof. Sebastian Probst (HES-SO Geneva School of Health Sciences / Geneva University Hospitals) and funded by an unrestricted research grant from Piomic Medical AG, which had no involvement in the study design, conduct, analysis, or reporting. Recruitment commenced in Switzerland in October 2025, with anticipated completion in December 2027.

NAZARÉ addresses a patient population with a high clinical need for which robust randomized evidence remains scarce. By using a pragmatic, multicenter design across five countries, the study will generate evidence that is directly applicable to everyday wound-care practice

Part of a broadening clinical portfolio

NAZARÉ complements MAVERICKS, Piomic’s pivotal FDA IDE trial in the United States evaluating COMS® therapy in therapy-refractory diabetic foot ulcers under a sham-controlled design. In September 2025, the COMS® One Therapy System received FDA Breakthrough Device Designation. Refractory diabetic foot ulcers rank among the most lethal conditions in medicine. Once a wound stops responding to standard care, five-year mortality reaches 50 to 70 percent, comparable to or worse than many common cancers, and fewer than a quarter of ulcers heal within twelve weeks of standard therapy. Outcomes of this severity are why patients who have exhausted conventional options need genuinely new therapeutic approaches rather than incremental variations on existing care. Vascular ulcers carry a parallel, if less visible, burden: they account for the majority of lower-extremity ulcers, recur in up to three quarters of patients within a year of closure, and consume a disproportionate share of chronic-wound spending across European health systems.

Vascular ulcers are among the most burdensome chronic wounds clinicians face, and patients whose arterial disease limits full compression have few good options. NAZARÉ is designed to show, rigorously, whether COMS® can help close that gap.

NAZARÉ is designed to close the evidence gap that stands between a CE-mark and broad clinical adoption. Its assessor blinded, comparative, multi-country design and its health-economic and quality-of-life endpoints are aligned with the comparative-effectiveness and real-world evidence expectations of the major health-technology-assessment and reimbursement bodies governing access in markets, including G-BA (Germany), HAS (France), NICE (United Kingdom), AIHTA (Austria) and BAG (Switzerland), alongside the real-world evidence pathways increasingly emphasized by payers in the United States. Together with MAVERICKS, NAZARÉ is intended to build the coordinated clinical and health-economic dataset required to support reimbursement for COMS therapy globally.

Zurich, Switzerland – 20 January 2026 – Piomic Medical, a leader in innovative wound care solutions, announces the successful initiation of the NAZARÉ trial, a prospective post-market clinical study evaluating the COMS® One Therapy System in patients with chronic ulcers of vascular origin.

NAZARÉ (Concurrent Optical and Magnetic Stimulation for chronic vascular ulcers) is an investigator-initiated trial (IIT) launched by a consortium of leading European wound care opinion leaders. The study reflects routine clinical practice, including outpatient care and treatment in patients’ homes, addressing the growing importance of home-based wound care within modern healthcare systems.

I am very excited that NAZARÉ has now officially kicked off. Generating high-quality real-world evidence is essential in chronic wound care, and this study has the potential to provide valuable insights into the role of COMS in patients with hard-to-heal vascular ulcers.
Prof. Dr. Sebastian ProbstPast-President of the European Wound Management Association (EWMA); Sponsor and Principal Investigator

The randomized, controlled, assessor-blinded, real-world clinical study designed to evaluate wound healing outcomes in patients with difficult-to-heal vascular leg ulcers (ABI 0.5–1.3) and is expected to enroll approximately 122 patients across multiple European countries. Recruitment began in 2025, with the study planned to conclude in 2027, generating a comprehensive real-world evidence dataset to inform clinical practice, reimbursement discussions, and long-term market access strategies. Participating Swiss centers include specialized wound clinics and university hospitals, providing a broad and representative real-world patient population.

The University Hospital Zurich is pleased to participate in the NAZARÉ study. We see strong clinical relevance in evaluating innovative, non-invasive therapies such as COMS in a real-world setting, particularly for patients with limited treatment options.
Prof. Dr. med. Jürg HafnerInvestigator at the University Hospital Zurich; Past-President of the International Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ISDS)
NAZARÉ represents an important step in generating robust real-world evidence for COMS therapy. Chronic vascular ulcers remain a major unmet clinical need, and high-quality post-market data from routine care settings are essential not only to inform clinical practice, but also to support reimbursement discussions and long-term market access. By demonstrating effectiveness, usability, and integration into standard care pathways across multiple European healthcare systems, NAZARÉ is designed to create meaningful value for patients, providers, and stakeholders alike.

ZURICH, Switzerland, September 19, 2025 – Piomic Medical, a medical device company pioneering non-invasive optical and magnetic stimulation therapy for chronic and acute wound management, announced today that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted Breakthrough Device Designation for its COMS® One Therapy System.

Concurrent Optical and Magnetic Stimulation, or COMS, is a category-defining medical device that delivers physical deep-tissue stimulation to reactivate and accelerate the body’s natural wound healing cascade. COMS improves mitochondrial function, nitric oxide and ATP production, and cellular energetics, mechanisms critical to restoring healing progression in chronic, non-resolving wounds.

This designation represents a major milestone in Piomic’s mission to bring advanced, accessible wound care to patients at greatest risk. With diabetes reaching epidemic levels globally, innovative therapies are essential to preventing amputations, improving quality of life, and minimizing the deleterious clinical and economic impacts of non-healing ulcers. COMS was developed with input from virtually all clinical environments, allowing for its application across the full continuum of care, from inpatient settings to home health. We believe COMS can help save lives and limbs, support caregivers on the front lines, and offer hope to patients and families navigating the burden of chronic wounds.
Christopher Hertz, Chief Executive Officer of Piomic MedicalChristopher HertzCEO, Piomic Medical

Positioned for Broad Impact and Long-Term Value

Published European studies have shown encouraging results for COMS across diabetic foot, venous leg, arterial, and mixed-etiology ulcers, supporting CE (MDR) certification and ongoing commercialization in select countries. A large Randomized Controlled Trial (RCT) in venous leg ulcers is also underway, highlighting the therapy’s growing role in real-world care. This investigator-initiated trial (IIT), called NAZARÉ, is led by Prof. Sebastian Probst (HEdS Genève / University Hospital Geneva).

In the U.S., COMS has received two CPT III codes from the American Medical Association, enabling future billing and reimbursement following market approval under the De Novo pathway. Its portable design and ease of use support broad adoption by wound care teams.

Led by Aksone Nouvong, DPM (David Geffen School of Medicine at University of California Los Angeles, UCLA) as National Principal Investigator, COMS is also being evaluated in MAVERICKS, a pivotal FDA IDE trial enrolling patients at 30 U.S. sites. With its rigorous sham-controlled design, including a 4-week screening phase to identify truly refractory diabetic foot ulcers (DFU), the protocol was recently published in WOUNDS in recognition of the new benchmark it sets in chronic wound research. As a result of MAVERICKS’ Category B IDE status, Medicare has approved payment for the device and routine supplies and services during the trial.

Patients with chronic ulcers deserve effective options when standard care fails. COMS was designed to work independently or alongside advanced therapies such as NPWT and skin substitutes, with the potential to become a foundational treatment in modern wound healing.
